ISLAND BAY CARNIVAL
OFFT-OTAT. OPENING TO-MOBJtOW. That the promoters of the Island Bay Carnival, which is being held to raise funds for the equipment of a playground area, are prepared to LUt every ounce of their energy into the project was made evident on Saturday afternoon, when the managers of the venture and an enthusiastic band of younj* fellows were busily engaged in tb o oi some of tlie temporary fixtures from the original site on the waterfront to ,a more sheltered spot on the .main road. This action was deemed advisable on account of the fact that the fierce southerly gale on Friday evening was responsible for the dismantling and' partial destruction of three tents on the ocean wave section. Nevertheless it was not essential for all to be toilers, and opposite the workers, young ■ folk on pleasure bent gave liberal patronage to a merry-go-ronnd and an ocean wave whilst a number of girls were actively engaged in the sale of sweets, etc., from a stall nearby conducted by ladies. So that although it was necessary to postpone the official opening by the Mayor, Mr. O. J. B. Norwood, the' carnival, in the circumstances, made a very creditable beginning, and it will be officially opened tomorrow night at 8 o’clock when everything will be in full swing.
