WOOLLEN WOOL PACK

A TEST IN MELBOURNE TRADE CRITICISM Br Telegraph.—Press Association. CoPI'UIGIIT. Melbourne, February 12. A test of the suitability of the woollen wool pack, as favoured by the Bradford G'luimbor .of Commerce for packing wool, was carried ou.t in a wool store here. The pack was subjected to dumping and handling treatment, as is customary with the jute wool pack. Tho woollen pack is of attractive appearance, and, as it weighs only six or seven pounds against the cloven pounds of the jute pack, its use would effect a saving in weight. Opinions expressed in the wool trade were that the woollen pack, as a result of tho test stretched appreciably. It was considered that by the time tho wool baled in the packs reached the seaboard from the stations, tho packs would bo out of shape. Consequently it would bo impossible to stack them in brokers’ warehouses three or four bales high, a practice which was essential in the economical working of the stores. The dumping test also disclosed that the pack lost its shape under this process. which would interfere with smooth working at stores, and would involve difficulties in respect of loading bales to advantage in ships’ holds. Another objection to tho woollen pack taken by the trade refers to windowcutting for showing the wool, which is necessary to conform with the rules cf wool buyers. It was shown that the packs had elasticity, and difficulty would be experienced in sewing them up satisfactorily. ~ , . , The cost of the woollen pack would also prejudice its adoption, as, while tho Bradford interests were willing, to pay growers vzlio used i,ius cluss oi pack an additional Jd. a pound for wool, only a minor portion of Australian wool found its way into their hands. —Press Assn.
