“SHINGLES OR TRESSES?”

HAS THE FASHION CHANGED FOR GOOD? By Telegraph—Special Correspondent Auckland, November 15. There was consternation among bobbed and shingled misses at one of Auckland’s great retail houses. Consternation, followed by frequent consultations, and many murmured threats of feminine rebellion. It is said that many tears were shed by dear little misses who feared a compulsory return to the shackles of long hair, but the trepidation of the shop-girl was needless. That lying jade, Rumour, had been at her tricks again. The first person a reporter encountered on entering the doors of the establishment in question was a little girl with a winsome face and a little shingled head of fine, jet black hair. This little lady smilingly denied that oiders had been issued by the firm for a return to long hair, under the penalty of dismissal within a certain period. “Oh, no,” she said, “that rumour is going about everywhere, but it isn’t true. Girls won’t let their hair grow again. Anyway, I’m sure its so nice and cool when its short, and you don’t have to be wasting time putting it in place all day. Besides, I think it looks nicer, don’t you?” Unhesitatingly, the reporter replied in the affirmative. Then he made a tour of the departments.. Fully fourfifths of the femininity in that establishment had surrendered their tresses to scissors, and shingle seeiiied to suit them almost all, while there could be no doubt as to the look of coolness and comfort. As to the unshingled fifth, it has to be admitted that long hair gives a lot of trouble. Some of the unshorn had straying wisps showing untidily about their foreheads, despite the frequent employment of fingers to try and make their hair “sta put.” But it must be admitted that tl<we were some heads charmingly arraved in Nature’s full garb, done in such style that one could not help recalling that “Woman's crowning glory is her hair.”
