Sir John Luke, M.P.. and Lady Luke left on Saturday for Dunedin. The Hon. Sir Heaton Rhodes,K.8.E., accompanied by Lady Rhodes, arrived in Wellington from Lyttelton on Saturday morning.

Sir Ernest Rutherford, whose health has much improved since his visit to New Zealand, will leave for Sydney to-day by the Maheno. The funeral of the late Trooper Basil G. Armitage-McElwaine, 15/157, took place at Ivarori on Saturday. The service was conducted by the Rev. Father Mullen. Amongst those present were: His Worshop the Mayor (Mr. C. J. B. Norwood), and Mr Forsvth, M.P., Mr. Tait (Assistant-Town Clerk), Major Gibbs (Defence Department), Major Watson (R.S.A.), Mrs. McHugh and Mrs. Neilson (Women’s National 'Reserve) , and a representative from the Pensions Department.

Mr. J. McClintock, Sydney manager for the Vacuum Oil Company, _ is a visitor to Wellington. Mr. McClintock, who was formerly manager for New Zealand, is a keen bowler, and is finding great pleasure in renewing old friendships on the local greens. The Rev. Canon H. D. Burton, who was formerly vicar of St. Michael’s, Christchurch, for some time, and . who has been vicar of St. Martin’s, Brighton ever since his return to England, has resigned his living to take up mission work in Barbados.

Hodge, barrister and solicitor. of Te Puke, one of the most respected residents of the Bav of Plenty, died at his residence on Wednesday. Born in Auckland in 1858, he was sent to Victoria until 1880. when lie went to Ot-nro as one of the first ol the trained Victorian .teachers. In 1884 lie unsuccessfully 'contested the I’enmstila electorate against the Hon. W. ]. Larliach, and three years later was defeated for Mount Ida bv Mr. Scobie Mackenzie. In 1908 Mr. Hodge commenced practice as a solicitor in Te Puke. At the time of his death he was senior partner in the firm of Messrs. Hodge and Keys. He was also interested in farming operations and was a member of the Kaituna River Board. He always took an active part in. local affairs, and recently several local authorities passed appreciative resolutions of his services. Mrs. Hodge, who was a sister pf Ladv Stout, died in April, There were no children.
