WORLD’S CHAMPIONSHIP
GOODSELL EASILY BEATS McDEVITT
(Rec. March 22, 5.5 p.m.) Sydney, March 21. The race for the world’s ' sculling championship was rowed to-day in fine weather. The water was choppy. From a good start Goodsell took the lead, both he and McDevitt rowing 36 strokes to the minute. At the quarter-mile Goodsell lost the grip of his right scull, but recovered before reaching the half-mile. Goodsell was then half a length in front, and gradually increased his lead, being two lengths ahead at three-quarters of a mile, and four lengths at the mile. The strokes of both men at this stage were reduced to 27 per minute. The first mile was covered in /min. 25sec. From this on Goodsell lengthened his lead and won by ten lengths. Goodsell rowed much more strongly than his opponent, and after covering two miles, which were rowed- in 14min. 25sec., was not troubled, and won comfortably in 22min. 20sec.—Press Assn.
