LYALL BAY SCHOOL CONCERT

4 A successful concert in aid of the funds' of the Lyall Bay School was held in the local Anglican Hall last night. The Mayor (Mr. R. A. Wright, M P.), addressing a crowded audience, said that the Lyall Bay School Committee was well known as a live body, deserving of all the recognition its efforts merited. The school grounds would benefit materially from the large attendance. ~ , , . , The programme, which had been arranged bv Mr. Palliser, was supplied by city talent of a high order. MrLeon de Manny’s violin contributions were played ivith full expression ana faultless technique. They included “Second Nocturne” (Chopin-Sarasate), “Latro” (Handel), (Kreider), and, as encore, “Mazurka (Wienniawski). Madame de Mauny gave as pianoforte solos ‘ Concert Waltz” (Wieniawski) and “Spanish Caprice” (Mozkowski), and as encore “Waltz Intermezzo,” with musicianly skill. For their fantasia, “Scenes de Ballet,” these talented musicians were loudly applauded, giving as encore “Le Cygne” (St. Saens). . Mrs. Wilfred Andrews was in good voice in “A Summer Night” (Goring Thomas) and “11 Bacio” (Arditi), and her encores “Come to the Fair” and “Curly-head-ed Bobby” were delightful numbers. Her “Hindoo Song” (Bemberg), with violin obbligato, was perhaps the best of her highly appreciated offerings. Mr. Culford Bell gave a dramatic recital, “The Vow,” from Sir Gilbert Parker’s “Adventures of the North,’’ followed by “Marmaduke on Politics,’’ a humorous disquisition on the attitude of the leisured class of England towards public matters. A fuse blew out during the climax of the dramatic story, but the darkness did not interfere with its effect. Mr. Howard Foster sang “Pagan” (Herman Lohr) and “Mandalay” (Willeby), giving as encore “Little Irish Girl.” At the close of the concert the performers were thanked bv the chairman of the committee (Mr. BurgoyneThomas).
