CROSS BENEFIT FUND

A large audience assembled at the Town, Hall despite the wintry conditions prevailing last night, when a concert, arranged by Air. H Temp’e White was given for the benefit of the family of the late Mr. 11. Cross, assistant traffic inspector to the City Council, who lost his life in the performance of his duty on the Hutt Road. An excellent programme was submitted bv the Professional Orchestra, under the baton of Air. Frank Crowther, and the Commercial Travellers’ Alale Voice Choir, under Air. H. Temple White. The vocalists were Aliss Aileen Noble and Aliss Alyra Sawyer, Alessrs. C. A. AVilliams and Len Barnes, all of whom chose numbers in keeping with the nature of the entertainment. The Mayor (Mr. R. A. Wright) announced that the Cross Benefit Fund Committee aimed at raising ,£l5OO in addition to tho 4)1.000 which had been voted by the City Council. The fund was a niost deserving one. as the late Air. Cross had been unable to leave his family adeauately provided for, owing to having himself been under medical attention for some years prior to his death. He (the Mayor) had just heard that Mr. Cross had for many years past supported his father in Auckland, who was blind.

The collection resulted in .£5l 10s. being raised. A concert was also given at Lvall Bay in aid of the fund yesterday afternooT.I>v the Artillery Band, under Lieutenant Herd, and resulted in .£lO Is. 3d. being collected.
