A Dunedin business man makes the following suggestion about the working of the railways (states the “Star”) :— “Now that the strike is over, the talk must commence about all sorts of questions, and one cf them, I think, should relate to the staffing of stations that provide very little work. There must bo a dozen stations between Dunedin and Invercargill at which there is very little for the men to do except to attend to, perhaps, half-a-dozen trains per day. It strikes ine that it would be wise, unless some technical difficulty presents itself, to leave each of those little stations to one man, and for each train to carry a staff of, say, six men to do all the work that is necessary. The one gang could work all those stations. If such a system could be brought about the country could afford higher wages to those who are employed.”

A consignment of 154 cases of bananas which arrived al Auckland from Niue Island by the steamer Rama last Saturday, is the first shipment that has reached New Zealand from that place (states the “Herald”). A fruit expert stated that the bananas were about the finest type that has ever reached Auckland. Diey were described as largo, sweet fruit, of exceedingly good quality. The shipment was landed in good order, only a few being over-ripe, and the success of the trial consignment has resulted in arrangement being made for tho Rama to load a much larger quantity when she next visits Niue.
