A match was played at Ke’burn Park yesterday between teams representing the Special Service Squadron and the Victoria College students. After an interesting contest, in which the students had the upper hand all through. College beat the visitors by 22 points to 5. The teams were:— Navy.—Mid. Mackinnon, Lieut. Rowlands, Mids. Stainton, the club captain of the University team, was referee. In the first spell the students instituted passing rushes, which were shortly successful, and McKay scored a good try under the posts, which he converted. From loose rushes the local team again attacked and .Toll scored in the corner. Blathwayt failing with the kick. The Navy then shook themselves together, and ns the menlt of passing and loose rushes they took the ball to their opponents* line, where Burnett was unlucky in not securing a try. failing to pick' up cleanly right on the line. A return rush by ’Varsity found the defence wanting, and Malfroy scored a try wide out, which McKay failed to convert. The Navy came back with passing which gailed a lot of ground, and then the forwards took a hand, rushing play to the ’Varsity line, where, three players rushed over, the try going to Walton. Mackinnon goa.ed with a very fine kick from a difficult angle, ana the scores at half-time were 11 to 5 m favour of the students. The Navy men found the pace a bit too strenuous in the second half, and although they battled gamely to the finish the ’Varsity backs were able to indulge in the passing game .with the result that tries were scored by Whiteman. and Malfroy (2). McKay converted Malfroy’s first trv, and the game ended: ’Varsity. 22: Navy, 5- The feature of the Naw play. was the good game by Lteut.
