TRAM EXTENSION

WORSER AND KARAKA BAYS PETITION TO CITY COUNCIL During the Easter holidays a. petition "has been numerously signed in the Worsen Bay, Karaka Bay, and Scorching Bar districts, which asks the City Council to extend the tramway service to Karaka Bay by way of Worser Bay. The original proposal of the Miramar Bcrough Council, when the tramway scheme was under construction, was that the tramway terminus should be at the foot of Church Street, near the Seatoun Wharf, but the route was diverted down Dundas Street to the existing terminus of to-day- Had the trams been taken down to Seatoun Wharf, as was intended, it would have added another splendid beach (that of Worser Bay) to the number of such resorts reachable by tramway, _ and would also have meant a concession to that large and growing district between Seatoun and Scorching Bay. Now the petitioners, strengthened by the growth of the district, and the increasing popularity of the bathing beaches of Worser and Karaka Bays, seek some consideration at the hands of the council. Th© petitioners state that for three years past a motor-bus service from Seatoun to Karaka Bay has been subsidised to the amount of £250 per annum, and the residents have further subsidised the service by £5O a year. The contention is that capitalised at 5 per cent., this would mean a sum of £6ooo—enough to build a tramway at least as far as the Worser Bay Swimming Club’s shed (a distance of three-quarters of a mile from the Dundas Street-Church Street comer), and, as there are no engineering difficulties, perhaps a little further. Builoing progress is marked along the hills above the bays mentioned, and, as water and drainage are. to be provided there, settlement will be speeded up. As a further reason for a tramway extension, mention is made of the elimination of the boat service for the winter. It. is believed that if there were an efficient tramway service to these bays all the year round, residence would be encouraged and consolidated.
