PRESBYTERIAN PULPIT
» OUTSTANDING PREACHER PASSES AWAY. The Rev. Dr. J. H. Jowett, of Westminster Chapel, passed away recently in London. Dr. Jowett was one of the most outstanding preachers in Great Britain, an.j by bis death he leaves a gap that it wall be cifficult to fill. He succeeded Dr. Dale in Birmingham, and later supplied the pulpit of the Fifth Avenue Presbyterian Church in New York. As the result of solicitations from many friends, among whom was the King, he returned to London as minister ef Westminster Chapel.' His death came unexpectedly at the age of 59. He wrote several books, and each cf them gave evidence of the finished style of a man of genius, and full consecration to the work of the ministry. He was to have visitedq New Zealand, but this journey was never accomplished. The Rev. G. H. Balfour, of Dunedin, is at present on a -isit to the Homeland, and in the last issue of the “Outlook” he gave bis impressions of the religious life in Great Britain. He has been greatly struck with the number of fine churches in Glasgow, and also with the large number of people who, attend them on Sunday mornings.
