GRAVES ON GALLIPOLI
WORK SERIOUSLY DELAYED SUSPICIOUS TURKS By Telegraph—Press Association, —Copyright. London, January 15. The Constantinople correspondent of “The Times” says:— “The work of the Imperial War Graves Commission on Gallipoli... has been paralysed by the Turks, who have suspended further quarrying at Ungardare. The blame for this action is put on the authorities at Angora, who. it is alleged, think that the handful of men employed are not solely engaged on the work of the cemeteries, but are also left behind for military purposes.” “This unjustifiable conduct of the ■Turks comes at a particularly unfortunate moment. Owing to the recent severe storms, damage estimated at £5OOO was done to quays and other establishments. It is estimated that the work on the cemeteries is thereby thrown, back two months. “It is calculated that, if th'e workmen had not hecn hindered, the necessary stone could have been quarried by the end of March. Even r.o. hope of the completion of the Imperial Memorial at Cap-? Helles by Anzac Dav has now been abandoned, since three-quar-ters of the memorial remains to be built. . The Australian Memorial at Lone Pine is only half finished.—<“The Times.”
