FIRE ON LAMBTON QUAY

DENTIST’S ROOMS GUTTED DAMAGE BY WATER At 10.10 last night the fire biigade received a call to an. outbreak of fire in Lindsay’s Buildings on the corner of Lambton Quay and Woodward Street. Tl:b alarm was given by a man who, standing on the footpath in front of Kirkcaldie’s, saw thick smoko issuing from the upper story and roof of the buildings. On investigation, it was found the outbreak was confined to rooms used by Mr. S. Fairchild, dental surgeon. Mr. Fairchild resides at Hamilton Street, Karori. Although the fire appeared to have a good hold, it was soon extinguished on the arrival of the brigade. It apparently originated in a small room used by Mr. Fairchild as a lumber room. The walls of the room and the floor were' badly burnt. By far the most extensive damage was done by water, the waiting ri.oms, workrooms, and dentistry rooms being well soaked. The only other tenant on the first floor to suffer from water was Mr. Laing Meason, civil engineer, whose offic<l was invaded by a slight quantity of water. The heaviest losers will probably be the proprietors of the shop on the ground floor known as Lindsay’s bootshop. Water penetrated the ceiling, causing considerable damage to stock, but to what extent was not ascertainable at an early hour this morning, nor were particulars of any insurances forthcoming. The building and land are said to be a Maori freehold, and leased by the Woodward Estate, who have sublet the premises to various people as offices.
