By Telegraph.—Press association. . New Plymouth, April 14. The professional golf tournament concluded on the New Plymouth links to-day, the results being as follow:— PROFESSIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP, Stroke Play over 72 holes. Shaw (Hagley Park. Chch.), 303 ... 1 Hood (Miramar), 309 + Ham (Heretaunga)./309 + Clements (Avondale), 309 t Moss (Middlemore. Auckland), 309 + ■(■Tied for second prize.

The prizes donated by tiie amateur golfers of the Dominion for the best scores (handicap) over the last 36 holes of the championship match resulted :—

Moss (scr.), 149 1 Clgments (2), 151 2 Ham (scr.), 153 3 The special prize for the best cross round was won by Shaw, of Christchurch, with 71, which is a record for the course. COMMENT ON THE PLAY (By “Niblick.”) The detailed scores of the leading players in the four rounds of the professional championship were as • follow:— Shaw '. 71 —76—78—78 303 Hood 76 —77 —76 —80 309 Moss 82-78—75-74 309 Clements 79 —77 —-75 —78 309 Ham 77—79—76—77 309 The victory of Shaw, the young Hagley park professional, was not unexpected. He favourably impressed everyone at the last New Zealand championship tournament by his effective style and equable temperament. Of fine physique, he gets a great length off the tees, while his short game is also effective. He was run-ner-up to Ham for the professional championship at Palmerston North in September last, being only beaten by 2 and 1 after a great fight. He owed his victory at New Plymo'otji to his brilliant opening round of 71, which was a record for the Ngamotu links, and is likely to remain so for some time to come. F. G. Hood, of Miramar, proved that he is an able player. He was well in the running up to the end of the third round, but crashed- rather badly with an 80 in the, final round. Hood, when in his best form, is a first-class player, and he extended J. H. Kirkwood at Auckland to the Australian’s full limit in an exhibition game there two years ago. Moss,, of Auckland, deserves credit for his bnlhnnt fourth round of .74, which retrieved his disastrous opening round of 82. The surprise of the tourm.uen® was that Arthur Brooks, tho Open champion of New Zealand, was unable to gain a place in the first five. The result of the championship goes to show that there is very little between the first half dozen professional players in the Dominion. Moss’s 149 for the last 36 holes, which won the handicap event, was a sterling performance,, as it works out at 744 for each round. Clements’s 151 for the two rounds also proves that his fellow professionals in the Dominion cannot afford to give him a handicap of two strokes. PLAY IN THE CITY
