THE RACING WORLD

TRENTHAM AUTUMN MEETING TO DAY

NOTES AND COMMENTS

. ■ 7; (By The Watcher.) The first day'of the Wellington Rac- ' jpg Club’s autumn meeting will be held at Trentham to-day. A frequent train service has been arranged, race . trains leaving at regular intervals from fi.so to 10.40. « To-day’s racing will bo commenced at ' noon and the card is as follows:—.

;The half-brother to Deucalion, who heads the list, has some useful performances to his credit, including wins in soft going, but he has been off the Beene since the summer' meeting of , the Manawatu Racing Club. Urgency, ' Explorer, Malingerer, ‘and Tigerland all ran prominently in their recent Easter engagements. War Loan, who has been set to carry big weights m -—recent hurdle races is well down tho ../•list with Ost. 81b. The useful” fair . Wai likes the going soft, and went very nicely yesterday over five furlongs.

.... N.Z. ST. LEGER STAKES, of 550 »ov». For ■_/ three-year-olds. Ono mile anti threeQuarters. _ . ■ Mr. A. B. Williams’s b. o. Bapme, by. Martian—Pineta, Bst. 101 b. - Mr.' W. T. Hazlett’s ch. f. Davis's Aik. C- Lucius, by - Lucullua—March," Bst. 71b. Lucius and Gold Light may be re- . served for another race. the top weight will be a certain starter. Many Kittle will have the services ' of a more experienced rider than! he has been accustomed to. |

Last year's Plunket Nursery Handicap disclosed a couple of good ones in Rapine and Gold Light, and it is highly probable 'that this year s field contains similar promising youngsters. Parody is a recent winner, while Orofino earlier in the season carried over nine stone and was an qasy winner over the distance. Others close to them in weight have won races, and the representatives of the local stables such as Last Crust and Star Ranger have been showing smart form in their track work,

, The top weights are all first-class performers, and those under Bst. contain many who have performed successfully. over the distance earlier in the season. Sunart has found the soft track to his liking. Roy Reed preferred to ride King’s Trumpeter rather than Grotesque, and southerners have a good -word for Lovesign. Haurangi and Quest are on the mark ' from which the race was won last year, Blackmail will be coupled with Solfanello. •

Rouen and Viewpoint are unlikely starters. Thespian and Queen March have incurred the full penalty. Pluto and Gay Juliet have escaped any penalties. The next rac3*ss the

. Parorangi was a double winner at Tauherenikau, Bonrina is a winner .. over the distance, Kahikatea and „ Stream have been regular track workers.

There will probably be some scratchings of the good ones in this race. Mireusonta won the race last year. Lucius has won over a distance at Trentham. Civilform seems more reliable than in his previous visits at Trentham. Prosperity and JOy Ride am recent winners amongst the lightweights. The last race of the day is the

There are several past winners in this race- —Laughing Eyes, Blue Socks, Sunny Vale and others. It is a lino field and should make a good race.

TRENTHAM TRACK WORK

-Trentham, April 1' The day before a meeting is usually regarded as an off day by trainers, but several, including new arrivals, took advantage of the mild morning and the drying track to sharpen up their horses. Tho track used was the new grass, which was soft. J. W. Lowe’s twog.year-olds Laughing Stock and Star Ranger brushed sharply over half-a-mile. Printemps beat The Speaker oyer five furlongs, run in Imin. 6sec., giving a much improved display from yesterday.

Sir Wai, Explorer, and Kilris went five furlongs in lmin. Csec, S.r Wai doing it well. Patuki and a went six furlongs, Patuki having a length to tho good, in lmin. 19sec. Last Crust and Stream ran half-a-mile in filjsec, Stream having tho advantage. Kahikatea and Kilbrid ran five furlongs in a tick under lmin. 6sec. The former made a gj>od showing on the improved going. > Roseday went half-a-mile alone in 52}sec., going easily. ’ Axle ran a similar distance in 52sec. Haurangi, alone, did a smart halfmile, going well within himself, when the post was reachejl, in 51 l-ssec. Taiparu (A. Oliver), bandaged in front, did trotting exercise.

Civilform was given half-a-dozen circuits at a slow pace. He has quietened down a lot.

On Tuesday King’s Trumpeter failed to hold Grotesque over six furlongs. When it was decided to start both horses in the big mile, R. Reed was offered the choice of mounts and'he took the former. The southern contingent, including Mason with Cupidou, Tressayr, Pluto, and Parody; Ellis, with Si-ver Peak, and Laughing .Eyes ; King, with Many Kittle: Prosser, with Lovesign and. Gold ’ Spinner: and Jones, with Urgency, Prosperity and The Reaver: arrived by yesterday morning’s ferry. Warhaven and Glenshine did not make tho trip.

The JVinkio gelding Many Kittle will start -in the St. .Loger Stakes, and will be ridden by C. Emerson. Royal Blood was exercised on the tracks yesterday morning and did a sharp gallop down the straight. It has not yet been decided in which race this horse will start, Tho improvement in the going, may induce his connections to take on the Thompson Handicap. Herb Price, Outfitters, extendo. a cordial' invitation to racegooi s to visit our well-known store for men. Smartest race wear in town. —Advt.

(By Glencoe.) ’Despite the recent racing there will be big fields in all the events at Trentham to-day, and in the majority of cases the races bear , a very open appearance. A lot of rain has fallen, but the tracks could do with it, and though the going will not be favourable to fast time, still it will be good and all the runners will have equal chances for it will riot be fast, and neither can it b-i called heavy. About the best way io describe it would bo to say that the sting is out of it. A big field will line out for the High Weight Handicap, yicluding the local ly-owned Vindictive. It is understood that Mr. Kpmball will start Birkenslla. R. Reed is to ride Rapine in tho St. Leger. Some eighteen two-year-olds are carded for the Plunket Nursery Handicap. Rightly Parody is top weight for he is a better horse- than he has yet shown. Many who were present at Riccarton say ho got a very ba’d passage in the Champagne Stakes, and he won on the second day.

.The star event of the day will be the Thompson Handicap, one mile. Twentyfour horses are likely to face the starter, but this is not an unweildy field for such a big course, and each one 1 , of tho' starters should bo able to get a clear run ag there is a straight of three furlongs at the start. The race will have the natrons of the totalisator guessing all the way, for it i» a high-class field, and there is ample material for a surprise. There is a tendency to follow good jockeys, and it is an extraordinary fact that rarely has this race been won by an inexperienced rider. The Williams’s bracket. King’s Trumneter and Grotesque, will both start. Roseday and Gold Light like the sting out of the ground. Tho probable starters and their riders are: Silver Peak, Sst. 121 b. ..: F. C. Porter Cupidon, Bst. 121 b G. Young Income, Bst„ 121 b. .... A. McFlinn

Roseday, Bst. 101 b A. Wilson Grotesque, Bst. 101 b C. Reed Solfanello, Bst. 91b.-,-A. Olliver Sunart, Bst. 61b At. McCartcn Gold Light, Sst. 21b F. Waddell Royal Blood, Bst. 21b E. Keesing King’s Trumpeter. Bst. 21b. ... R. Reed Scotch Mixture, Bst. C. France Highland, 7st. 131 b A. Reed Rouen, 7st. 131 b J. Proctor ListoWel, 7st. 101 b P. Raynor Lovesign, 7st. 81b F. Lowe Printemps. 7st. 71b H. Wheeler Martian Miss, 7st; 51b H. Stuart Haurangi, 7st. 51b J. Morrison Quest, 7st. 51b. -

Boadicca, 7st. 41b I). Butler Golden Light, 7st. 11b. ..*. -—-— Blackmail, 6st. 101b~H. Wiggins The Speaker, 6st. 101 b. H Dunn Cheer Up, Gst. 71b C. Robinson

Probably only half a dozen will contest the North Island Challenge Stakes. Tho elder division will bo represented by Pluto and Thespian, and the youngsters by® two. smart two-year-olds in Viewpoint and Gay Juliet, both winners.

Tho Silverstream Hack Handicap is for apprentice riders. This means that tho machine will.not do a-s much business as usual, for rightly or wrongly it seems to bo the general impress-on that the youngsters cannot get the Lest out of their mounts. With freerunning horses such as Kahikatea and Stream and others, however, it should be a great race. The field for the Railway Handicap will see a big thinning out as several of them are in the big mile,, arid tho prize money being so much bjgger will get tho starters. Tho running of Vespucci in_.the long Wellington straight should be worth seeing. Mireusonta is soro, but ho gallops well when right. Lucius has won over this but <t -Question if he is

not better on a firm track. Civilform can go well anywhere. The Tinakori Handicap will be a severe test for most of tho hacks. Blue Socks is a local representative in this race, while Refrigeration will strive to uphold Wairarapa interests. Owners are reminded that accept- ’ anoe.s for the first day’s events of the Manawatu meeting close on Friday night. To meet the convenience of visiting trainers the club has arranged for a special drain to run through to Palmerston North, on Sunday morning, leaving Trentham about 9 a.m. . A private cablegram received from Sydney last night states that the Waikanao brood mares sold there yesterday averaged 260 guineas. Top price was brought by Lady Stewart. 500' guineas, and others sold were Torquay 360 guineas, Happiness > 310 guineas. Restful. 300 guineas, and Bonnie Lady 3po guineas. We extend to trainers and jockeys an invitation to visit our Sports Store in Willis Street. Herb Price.—Advt.
