In the, course of the annual report of the Chamber of Commerce, the following reference is made to the subject of trade in the Far East:—“Representations were made to- the Government to send a special trade- representative to the Far East, but this proposal has not been able to be entertained on account of financial reasons. Much, of course, will depend upon the establishment of a direct steamer sendee, when New Zealand would be in a position to compete in tho market there with her primary products. At present tho transhipping at Sydney handicaps trade, and makes it unpayable, whereas with direct services there would bo more inducement for shippers.
