Dobson by 8 p.m. tomorrow (Friday). Nominations for the Nelson meeting do se on I’riday. Kick Off. who annexed the Egmont Cup yesterday ; is a good performer over middle distances. He a good third in the Wellington Cup, to that his win was not unexpected. Th® runner-up, Mark Time, also ran up to form, and showed that his dual win at Roxton was no fluke. The surprise of the AVingatui meeting vestei-day was the victory of Arospucci in tho Publicans’ Handicap. In the past the A r arco gelding has not been noted for his sprinting ability, and most of his successes have been obtained over middle distances. He has not won a race for twelve months, «o his win was overdue. The Hastings owner-trainer, AV. Griffiths, met with an accident last week, and at present he is in the Napier Hospital with a broken leg. Despite the unsettled state of th® country, horse brooding in Poland seems to be freely indulged in, and at vho Newmarket sales in December eighteen stallions were purchased on behalf of tho Ministry of Agriculture of Poland. The team controlled by R. O Donnell at Trenthnm is shortly to be strengthened by the addition of three fillies belonging to Mr. J. B. Reid, who, despite his absence in England, will continue to race hero for soma time. A. Reed has come to the conclusion that Palmerston North would b© a more central place for him to reside now that he is, a free lance jockey. With this end in view ho will dispose of his Ttenfham property and settle in the Manawatu district. Loughrea, winner of the President’s Handicap at AVingatui yesterday, is a four-year-old gelding by Kilbroney from Sister Radius, and was bred by his owner, Mr. L. C. Hazlett., He has always had a reputation as a good hack, anti at the Hunt Club meeting on the same course h© won the Arauxhall Handicap. The runner-up yesterday was the unlucky Pilliewinkie, who has"oeen in a minor place in his last three starts. In well-informed circles it is stated that Mr. H. E. Troutbeck intends again entering the ranks of owners, and as in the past - A. McAulay will act as private trainer for the Rotorua sportsman Olyntbus has been giving his trainer troubl© for some time, and though he won on the opening day at Woodville end was accepted for on the second day he could not start. Ab the prog--onv of Demosthenes generally race well on soft tracks, it would seem to be the right idea not to race Olynthus until the going gets easier. Last year there was a great outcry over the number of falls in the Liverpool (Eng.) Grand National. This year, with the idea of keeping out the rubbish, the sweepstakes for starters has been raised to £lOO. AVhether that will .have the desired effect is doubtful, as in England tho man who is prepared to pay £5O to run a horse is unlikely io baulk at £lOO. The added money for this year’s Grand National is £5OOO, and £9OO of - the stake is distributed between the second, third, and fourth horses. The Paris correspondent of a London paper says that at Auteuil last month there was a tremendous demonstration against tho owner of Le Stiff, winner of t> etftK’hg plate. A fortnight earlier, when favourite for a similar race, Le Stiff finished last. After seeing him xin at Ilia next run, the public decided he was appropriately named, and loudly expressed themselves to that effect.
