A Press Association. cablegram from London reports the death of the Hon. Victor Huia Onslow, son of the fourth Earl, a former Governor of Now Zealand. ,

Sir Walter Buchanan, M.L.C., having been reappointed at tho conclusion of his term of office as a Councillor, was sworn in afresh when the Legislative Council hold its first sitting of the session yesterday. In congratulating Sir Walter Buchanan on the reappointment, the Hon. R. Afoore said' ho remembered how, in 1890. Sir Walter Buchanan, Sir William Fraser, and ho had worked as members of tho game party in the Lower House. They were a very small and very loyal band, doing their duty then as they saw it on party lines. Now that they were members of the Council ho hoped that they had ’set aside anything in tho nature of party feeling as they legislated in the interests of tho Dominion and of the Empire. Mr. R. Stout, nephew of the Chief Justice, Sir Robert Stout, has been appointed? his associate in place of Air. W. H. Cocker, who has entered tho legal profession.

The funeral of No. 11484 tho late Mr. William Johnston, N.Z.E.F., took place yesterday afternoon at Knrori Cemetery. At the graveside tho Wellington citizens were represented by His Worship tho Afayor (Mr. R. A. Wright, AI.P.), and the Town Clerk. Prior to joining the New Zealand Expeditionary Force the late soldier was an officer of the Public Works Department which was represented by the chief accountant (Air. Waldie), and other officers. Captain T. Af. Wilkes attended on behalf of tho< Defence Department, and there were also present representatives from the Chamber of Commerce, the Commercial Travellers’ Association, the Young Men’s Christian Association, the Women’s National Reserve, and the Returned Soldiers’ Association. Several soldiers now receiving treatment at Trentham also attended the funoral. At the mortuary ohapel in town, the senior scholars of tho Newtown School and tho scholars from Karori School formed a guard of honour at th 6 graveside. The Rev. Erie Rich conducted tho service, the firing party being supplied by the Wellington College Cadet Corps. The late soldier was seriously wounded in September, 1916, and had been under almost continuous treatment up to the time of his death.

Feeling reference was made by tho president (Air. C. J. B. Norwood) at last evening’s meeting of tho Victoria Bowling Club te the death of two members, Messrs. James Kellow and John Kershaw, and members honoured their memory in the customary manner. It was also decided to convey the club’s sympathy to Mr. Donald AloLeod in his recent bereavement. The president alluded to the loss sustained to the centre in the death of the late Afr. S. H. Underwood* who was popular throughout tho Dominion, (and who took pleasure in other’s pleasure. Members personally and bowling generally had sustained a great loss. Mr. William Duke, well known in connection <• with tho butchering business in Dunedin, died last night (states a Press Association message).

The death occurred at his late residence, Rima Street, Miramar, last evening, of Mr. John Murphy, a pioneer of the Featherston and AVairarapa districts. Tho late Air. Murphy arrived at Melbourne sixty-six years ago in the ship Queen of the Seas, and a .year later came over to New Zealand. He spent practically the whole of his life in Featherston, where he was engaged in farming. The deceased took a great interest in the welfare of the district, and was prominent in everything that made for its advancement. The late Mr. Alurphyj who was predeceased by his wife some twelve years, is' survived by a grown family of twelve—eight sons and four daughters. The sons aro Messrs. John, Richard, Andrew Herbert, Stafford, Frederick, and Gilbert Murphy, all of Featherston, and Air. Henry Murphy, of Foilding? Alesdames G. S. Cole, B. Cortnolly. and P. Lynch, of Wellington, and Airs. H. Winnie, of Lower Hutt, are tho daughters.

•At the annual meeting of the Newtown Bowling Club, held last evening, a tribute was paid b.y tho new president of- tho club (Air. C. AV. Barker) to the late Air. S. H. Underwood, who had hold office as hon. secretary for the last ten seasons. Air. Underwood had been a very enthusiastic howler, he had been secretary of ■ the New Zealand Council, and also the Wellington Council, and had arranged all tournaments that he had had to deal with in an extraordinarily capable manner. His work in conjunction with the recent trip of Now Zealand bowlers to England had also reflected great credit on Air. Underwood. An extremely promising man had been lost to the city in Afr. Underwood’s death. It was' decided that a motion expressing the condolence of the clubs ho sent to Airs. Underwood. Reference was also made to the deaths of Afessrs. O. Pankhurst and J. Finlay Bethune, both prominent members of tho club. As a mark of respect to the memory of the late members, the motions of condolence were carried, with members standing in silence.
