Two of the most important sections In the competitions were decided last evening. These were the finals of the Bristol Scholarship for the' pianoforte, for players 15 and under 18 years of age. The competition, which consisted of the playing of two charming preludes by. Chopin induced some delightful playing, particularly by Miss Gwen Wing and Miss Molly Ward, 'both of whom showed rare facility in the fingering of the delicate lackwork Chopin has traced in these lovely works. There 'was little to choose between the 'trio. The judge decided in favour of Miss Wing by four points only —359. The second big event was the final of the New Zealand test recital for ladies, which was won by that consistent and versatile young lady, Mias Madge Shearer, of Lower Hutt, with clever Mary Cooley as a close ninner-up. There was only one. singer worthy of honours In the soprano section ("Rosebuds") last evening. That was Mias Lillian Hanham, of Christchurch, who was admirably suited In this florid: song of joy, though her tempo was not impeccable in the middle passage of the song. The sacred solo for tenors was won by Air. Harry Phipps, who sang "Bo Thou Faithful Tinto Death,” from "St. Paul," on his interpretative capacity. Mr. Frank Bryant exhibited the best tone, in a somewhat colourless rendering of "How Lovely Are Thy Dwellings." This singer has a tenor voice worthy of the best tuition. The vocal solo, with obbligato, was a somewhat depressing section, and the recitals with musical; accompaniment were not of arresting interest.. A bright dancing interlude was provided by Miss Thelma M'Kenzie, Zelda Bailey, and Betty Jacomb, in what was called an "operatic" dance. The secretary (Mr. G. W. Jenner) asked all prize-winners to claim their trophies at the earliest possible moment. He will attend at his office in the Town Hall for that purpose from 9.30 a.m. today. '
