LOWER HUTT AFFAIRS

BOROUGH COUNCIL MEETS. The Lower Hutt Borough Council met last night, the Mayor (Mr. E. P. Rishworth) presiding. Councillors A. J. Hobbs, A. J. West, AV. B. Hardy, J. Mitchell, E. J. Guincss, W. Meldrum, W. Knight, A. Macaskill, and W. Cotton were present. The town clerk, Pctone, wrote acknowledging receipt of the council’s letter regarding tho gas question, and stating that his council hoped! that a satisfactory agreement might ultimately be entered into between the two bodies. The resignatiftn of Councillor Willoughby Knight as one of the council’s representatives on the Cemetery Board, was received with regret, and the Mayor expressed the council’s appreciation of the valuable services rendered by him.

The secretary of the Lower Hutt Valley Fire Brigade wrote pointing out that tho council’s employees continued to uso .the brigade’s room, and trusting that the council would insist upon their instructions being carried out. The council decided to take steps to stop the practice at once. Councillors Knight and Hobbs reported that tho engineer and Mr. Dyke had made an excellent job of levelling and sowing part of the recreation ground. The Mayor stated that Mr. Baldwin, who had done so much for the gone! of the district, was leaving on a. trin to the Old Country in company with Councillor Knight, and it was his intention to invite the local bodies a’hd school committees to meet next week to give him a farewell. «
