ST. MARY’S CHURCH, KARORI

PARISHIONERS’ ANNUAL MEETING

The annual meeting of the parishioners of St. Mary’s, Karori, was held last night, tho vicar, the Rev. G. Y. Woodward, presiding. The churchwardens’ report was read by Air. J. W. Henderson. It showed that there had been an improvement in the .general offertory; as well as in subsections to the parish fund. There lin'd ■been a drop in the funds sent outside the parish, but the churchwardens were pleased to note that the ■ offertory for the Melanesian mission was a record one (.£32 18s. Bd.). The efforts of'.the parishioners to erect a parish hall and Sunday School were reported to be meeting with some success. The Ladies’ Guild during the.year raised .£163, and with other sums—.£3s, proceeds of social, <£24 10s. from a successful children’s effort organised by Mrs. Alfred Henderson, and <£l42 raised by a committee of ladies—there was now £679 in cash available. If the response to. the efforts of the coming year wore as good as expected, the vestry hoped before long to put up fl rough east and concrete building in the same style as the' church. The new church at Makara had been begun .and the complete plans of the diocesan architect were to be carried out. The church should be ready for consecration free of debt in August, and the parishioners there deserved the ■heartiest congratulations.

! Tile vicar’s report dealt with the various organisations of the parish and paid a high tribute to the many workers who had .helped to make the year so successful. The vicar said he measured the progress of the year not so much from ■ the financial aspect, but rather from the attendance at the service of the Holy Communion, for thia. was the test of the spiritual life of the community. He was glad to see that this service had been well attended.

Mr. J. W. Henderson was appointed vicar’s churchwarden and Mr. J. Picot people’s warden. The following-vestry was elected: —Messrs. O. Cook, W. F. Newcomb. A. G. Henderson, A. P. Harper, A. W. Andrews, L Porter, J. Holden, R. Caldwell, P. Keenan and R..Sunley.
