A WAR MEMORIAL

TO BE ERECTED IN FRANCE PLAN AND SITE APPROVED Cabinet has approved of the design of Mr. S., Hurst Seagal- for tho battle exploits memorial to be erected at Longuezal, in France. The site chosen for the erection of the memorial was recently visited by Sir James Allen. It is an elevated point known as "Le Haut de la Justice," and the ground necessary for the erection of the memorial has been presented to New Zealand by the local authority. In recognition of this gift, the Government of New Zealand, on the recommendation of Sir James Allen, has presented a tractor and plough to the commune, to assist m the work of restoring the devastated area. The site is at a point where three roads meet, one going towards Oourcellette, one towards Longueval, and one to Tiers. A circular space 120 metres In diameter will be prepared for the memorial, which is to be in the, form of a graceful obelisk erected in white limestone. It will be 2? feet high, and will bo readily observable from the surrounding villages. On the curved base of the obelisk will be erected panels, one of which will hear the inscription: ' Erected'to commemorate the Battle of Flors, in which the New Zealanders and their 'comrades-in-arms achieved a noble victory.” Round the obelisk it is proposed 'that hedges, ( trees, and New Zealand flora should be planted. The design for the memorial hag been warmly approved by the Mayor ami councillors of Hers.
