WINTER FUEL

COAL SHORTAGE EXPECTED THE SUPPLIES OF WOOD "What steps is the Government taking to assist householders with substitute fuel during the coal shortage?" ie a question which has been asked on several recent occasions. Tho Hon. D. H. Guthrie, Acting-Minister in Charge of Coal Control, stated yesterday that the Wellington Coal Trade Committee had informed him that there was very little prospect of the full requirements of coal for domestic purposes being met, although it was not thought, judging by present conditions, that the shortage would be as acute as it was last winter. "Nevertheless," said Mr. Guthrie, "economy will etill be necessary, and householders will again have to rely largely in wood and coke this coming winter.”

Inquiries made in this connection go to show that, coal dealers generally hold large stocks of firewood, and the Government Firewood Depot has accumulated about 2500 cords of the best classes of wood, which is now being cut to meet the heavy demands anticipated during Xhe next few months. "Tho Firewood Depot, which was set up specially by the Government to assist householders readily to obtain supplies during the coal shortage, is now firmly established,” said the Minister, ’and is in a position to deal expeditiously with all expected requirements. It will be remembered that arrangements were made some time ago for the acceptance of orders at tho various suburban, post offices, and it has now been possible'for. carrying facilities to bo provided whereby deliveries can be made to the various parts of the city and suburbs daily.**
