SCHOOL INSPECTORS
FOUB 'NEW APPOINTMENTS. New arrangements to better the condition of school inspectors were announced 'by tho Minister of Eduoation, Hon C. J. Parr, on Saturday. It haa been stated, he said, that the inspectors wero over-worked in that they had not only to travel about the country examining schools, but had ako to mako their reports and correct examination papers in the Christmas and other holidays. Cabinet bad this week authorised the appointment of four additional inspectors., Ho recognised that the inspectors as' a rule did very .good work, and it was not to the advantage of anyone that they should bo expected to work on examination papers during , their holidays. Tho new appointments would give some little relief in this way.
Another change was also being made. Inspectors had hitherto been, compelled to liv« i in the districts assigned to tbem ; This the Minietcr thought was a mistake, as it prevented the inspectors from meeting frequently and exchanging notes. There was no educational body where frequent consultation ires more necessary than the inspectorial body, especially in regard to the grading of'teachers. In future, inspectors would be allowed to live where they pleased. There was no advantage in an inspector being compelled to live in his district. Notwithstanding the financal pressure at present on the Treasury, concluded the Minister, ho hoped to have some moderate inorcaso made in the inspectors' salaries. ■ ,
