ACTING AS CHECK ON CAMPAIGN OF OUTRAGE
OFFICIAL REPLY TO TRADE UNION CONGRESS (By Telegraph-Press Association-Copyright (Reo. July 15, 11.30 p.m.) London, July 15. With regard to the Trade Union Congress resolution in favour of a general strike to compel tho withdrawal of troops from Ireland, the Irish Office has issued a statement emphasising that tho eole purpose of the troops in Ireland is to assist the civil power. to maintain law and order and defend Ireland. They are in no wise an army of occupation. Military law has not been proclaimed 1 . The mere presence of the troops bns been found to act as a check on the campaign of outrage. This has boen abundantly moved. Responsible Irish opinion welcomes the intervention of armed forces. It is impossible to withdraw tho troops and leavo the''law-abiding majority and peaceful agents of the civil government at tho mercy of the forces of disorder.— Renter. sinnlekT loan (Ecu. July 15, 5.5 p.m.) London, July 14. Dublin reports state that the Sinn Fein finance department is closing the Sinn' Fein loan. J2295.000 has been subscribed.—"The Times."
