SOLDIERS' SCHOLARSHIPS
o- . THE N.Z.E.F. SCHEME. ' The granting of scholarships tenable nt British universities and colleges was a part of the education scheme adopted by the New Zealand Expeditionary Force during tho demobilisation period. Fifty scholarships were granted in Britain, to the value of from ,£l5O to .£250 per annum, according to the course of study selected aid the financial means of the scholar. Two scholarships wero issued at A'lso, two at .£175, 28 at .£2OO, and 18 at ,£250. The duration varied from six months to tlirc? years, tho majority being for three years. A return issued by the Vocational Branch of the Defence Department shows that the subjects selected by the holders of these scholarships were as follow:— .Agriculture G, architecture 5, engineering 6, medicine, G science 8, art 2, arts 3, classics 1, economics 3, forestry •!, industrial science 1, languages 2, law 1, mathematics 1, philosophy 1. Two additional scholarships were granted in special cases in New Zealand, and ara being held at the School of Engineering, Canterbury College. The total expenditure undertaken to provide these scholarships has been X22,f125. Tho exsoldiers who arc studying under the scheme in Britain are under bond to return to New Zealand within twelve months of the completion of their courso and to stay 'hero for at least three years.
