BRITAIN'S ATTITUDE TO BULGARIA

Sir Edward Grey, questioned in tho Honsq of Commons, said that Bulgaria has taken up a position of armed neutrality to defend her rights and independence. She had no aggressive-intentions towards her neighbours. There was no hostility, between England arid Bulgaria, but there was a traditional sympathy with the Bulgarian people.. As .long as Bulgaria did not side with Britain's enemies there would bo no question of British iniluenco being a hoslijio force against Bulgaria. _ If, ho continued, Bulgaria's mobilisation .wore the result of an aggressive attitude, we were propared to give oui friends in tho BaJbans all the support in our power in the manner most welcome to them, in coacert with our Allies, and without reserve or qualification. 'Theso were also tho views of tlio'Allies. Our policy had been to secure agreement among the Balkan States, ensuring them a brilliant future and independence, based on tho territorial and political union of kindred nationalites. (Cheers.) The German policy, on the other hand, had been to create for its own purpose disunion and war. The Balkans had been used by Austria'to'precipitate the European war. The result was that tho Empire had completely subordinated Turkish interests, which would have been preserved if Turkey had remained neutral. But she was forced by Germany into tho war, to ualiso German aspirations from Berlin to Bagdad. In tho same way, it -.could only be German policy to use Bulgaria, with the inevitable result that Bulgaria would b& subordinated, and, though promised territorial gains, would lose her independence.

German and Italian newspapers assert that Bulgaria has not made' an engagement to support any belligerent. Berlin denies that Bulgaria lias sent an ultimatum to Servia. London, September 28 • Reuter's Agent at 'Athens says that the news of the Allies' victory comes at the right moment, dispelling the last vestiges of pro-Germanism.
