AN "EXTRA VIOLENT" CONFLICT ' NIGHT ATTACK ON THE ARGONNE The High Commissioner reports:— London, June 27, 6.20 p.m. "North of Arr.is the Germans have regained a footing on tho croES road at North Souchez, oil a front of about 200 metres (21.8 yards). "In the Argonne, at Bagatelle, the enemy attacked with oxtremc violence at the beginning of the night. After a hot struggle tho attack was finally repulsed. "On tho heights of tho Meuse, in the trench at Calonne, the combat continued all night, the French maintaining the gains thoy had_ previously made. "French aviators on Friday threw 20 bombs on the railway station at Douai, and on neighbouring stations. Douai was seriously damaged." London, Juno 28, 3 a.m. "There has been a violent artillery duel in Belgium, and in the region of North Arras, with local fighting in the Argonne. Positions aro unchanged. "The French at Calonne oh Saturday night engaged in a conflict of an extra violent nature, developing into a hand-to-hand fight. The enemy used inflammable liquid, and succecdod under cover of smoke-clouds, in reaching their former first line, but were repulsed with heavy losses." ENEMY'S INCENDIARY BOMBS DROPPED ON ARRAS. (By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright) Paris, Juno 27. A hundred incendiary and asphyxiating bombs were dropped on Arras. Fires were started, and a gendartno and a nun were killed and many injured. UNINTERRUPTED PROGRESS BY THE FRENCH EXODUS OF CIVILIANS FROM MUNSTER VALLEY. ("Times" and Sydney "Sun" Sorrices./ London, Jun® 27. A correspondent says that the French have progressed in North Franco almost uninterruptedly. The Germans are using gas shells in increasing quantities, but they are powerless to arrest the French. Plentiful supplies of ammunition enable tho French U> prevent counter-attacks whilst fortifying new positions. The Zurich "Post" says that towns and villages in tho Mun-ter Valley, in Alsace, have been hurriedly evacuated by the inhabitants in consequenco of the French advance.
