SHANNON.
Standing room only was the condition of affairs in the lodge room of the Druids' Hall «n Tuesday night, when tho "first sitting of the Supreme Court in Shannon" was the item on tho syllabus of the Debating Society. Tho first case to come up for hearing was Arabella Rmve (Miss Olivo Laurvig) v. Harry Rowe (Mr. J. T. Bovis), breach of promise unil damages. "Lord Justice" Trainer presided, a.nd the Rev. Mr. Hydo was counsel for plaintiff, Mr. Murdoch being counsel for defendant. Correspondence of an amusing nature was road in "Court," nnd- Mrs. Rowe (Airs. Gibson) gave evidence. The jury brought in a verdict for tho plaintiff. The next case wa.s J. G. Barclay, Ethel Smith, and Charles Dunckley v. Henry Logan, rope-maker, an injunction to restrain defendant from allrwing the effluents from his rope-walk to pollute the waters of tho Pacific Ocean, and damages of .0500 wero claimed. Messrs. AY. Clayton and R. E. Selby, "IC.C.'s," were counsels for tho plaintiffs and defendant respectively. Amongst tho witnesses called for the prosecution were Mr. J. Tilling, "tho Government Analyst," "Professor" Gardiner, a chemist analyst, was called by the defence, and submitted samples of wafer, which, apparently, entirely refuted tho '•Gbwrnnieut Analyst's" evidence, n:nd of which "Judge and jury" partook with great relish. Other witnesses for the defence were: Mr. T. Hensuia.ii, "farmer," Mrs. Laurvig, "lady of nieaas," and Mr. Hiuchcliffp, "aerated water manufacturer." The jury, after a brief retiremcnij unanimously gave tho verdict for creiendan'f. In <n>ite of which, "Judge" J. J. Trainer put on tho black cap, and condemned defendant—his own rope to bo used. The entertainment created much diversion, for which the efforts of Messrs. Trainer and Clayton wero largely responsible.
