—: 4 - THE MATRICULATION MARKS. (By Telegraph—Prcs3 • Association.) • Christchurch, January 21. The University Senate this morning ■referred to the Scholarships Committee a letter from the Unbans Memorial Committee, offering the sum of .£lO5 for a prizo of .£lO, to bo offered every two years, for an essay open to. students of tho training colleges who are matriculated students of not more than three years' standing. Professor F. D. Broivn.moved:—"That regulations regarding mechanics, physics, and chemistry, for matriculation and junior scholarships be revised." This was carricd; and tho matter was referred to a special "committee. The Recess Marking Committee recommended—(l) That the marks for a pass should not bo lowered in any subject be-low a defined'minimum, but that compensation might be afforded for comparative weakness in singlo subjects. (2) That' in matriculation tho statute maximum ■ intho Maori language, history, geography, music, and drawing be 100, and other subjects 200. (.1) That, every caudidate bo required to pass in English, elementary mathematics, Latin, or Greek, or French or German, and, except, for a candidate who passes ill Latin or Greek, one. of tho sciences bo compulsory. (4) That an aggregate of 40!) marks be required for a pass. (s)' That no candidato may sit for moro than seven subjects; In regard to marking of tho qualification papers, it was recommended that the marks assigned by an examiner should bo averaged, and- that tho averago be treated as 50 per cent cf tho maximum, and also that adjustments of the marks'assigned should bo adjusted accordingly. Tho debate was adjourned till Monday.
