LAYING KARORI CABLE.
| APPEAL BY THE LABOURERS. The following petition, which has been forwarded to Mr. Stuart Richardson, city electrical engineer, is Sclf-explana-tory :— "four petitioners are labourers engaged in laying underground cables from tho city to Karori for the supply of electrical power to the. Karori.. Borough Council. Msny of us ore married men with largo families. We find the. diffir. culties of making ends meet,-from ..one, earnings as casual labourers, very great. Ths work is now approaching rough and hilly country, making it more arduous. Tho lino of i'outo is taking us away from tho usual tram-line, whore we couid.taks advantage or workers' cars and other privileges. A number of us have had previous cxperienco of this worl:, and have become proficient". Inducements aro being offered by private employers to men to work at higher rates of wages than we are now obtaining. Wherefore we humbly petition you to rccommend a minimum wage of Is. 3d. per hour (o all the, labourers employed in the work."
