TWO MEN KILLED.

A fatal; accident occurred this afternoon at the Waihi Company's mine, whereby a miner named J. O'Malley, a single man, was killed instantaneously, and his mate, F. White, a married man, was so seriously injured that he died ia« the evening. It appears that the .'two men, in com- : pany with a miner named Manuel, were in the ladderway of 7 No. i shaft, making preparations for the haulage of 'water ' and air pipes at the time of the accident. Manuel was attending' a' winch in/an : intermediate level, when he.heard a rush- 1 ing noise in the. shaft, which, 'it'trans- ' pired, was caused ; by. the men' falling ' down the shaft,, the distance of the fall 1 being about 170 feet. ! It is .surmised, that; the men - lost :fheir footing on the ladderway when .in the i act of attaching.- a'-":. tackle ' block to a 1 bearer across , the shaft. Probably one < man lost his balance,- and, in .falling,' \ knobked his mate off .'the ladder. .
