The Manawatu members of fclie AYanganui Education Board were> particularly severe at Wednesday's meeting of the Board on the Government grant for tlio purchase of books for free distribution. Under the conditions dccided upon, Mr. G. Bennett (Palmerston) said- tho grant was nothing but an electioneering dodge, and in any caso the sum granted was absolutely inadequate. Mr. Guthrie, tho Opposition candidate for Oroua, said the Government ivas going back to the antiquated system that had failed and been given up long ago in England, whilst Mr. I'irani said tho money could have been allotted for more necessary works. The Board was not by any means enthusiastic over tho affair, which was referred to tile Chief Inspector.
