The Moderate League.
On very eliort notice, an address by Mr R. R. Douglas, organiser for tbe Moderate League, was delivoicd in the hall on Wednesday evening to a small audience, the Mayor (Mr Brodrick), presiding. The speaker dealt at some length with the Liquor question ficru his league’s point ol view, and presented some reasonable arguments in a competent manner. He had something in his favor in the argument " that it should not be necessary to import Americans to the Dominion to educate the people in their own busimss. ard spoile flora the point that his party weie out to allow the use, but prevent the abuse, of alcohol, which enu’d be done by State Purchase and Control. The more reasonable and inteiesting part of the address, however, was some, what discounted by his extreme reference to the Prohibition party in the last campaign, based on (he state ment that they had given misleading information regaiding the probable cost to the country, .and his severe condemnation of a section of the church At the conclusion ot the address, one question was asked and answered, and a vote of thanks was accorded by acclamation. P«ior to opening his address, Mr Douglas offered any of the Prohibition party the privilege of speaking first, and afterwards replying, but none was forthcoming.
