Conversazione and Social.

On Thursday evening last quite a large crowd assembled in tho Athenaeum Hall, Cromwell, the occasion being the Citizens' Reception to the Vincent County Football Team. His Worship the Mayor occupied the chair, and several members of the: team, including J. Davidson from Clyde, sat upon the stage. The Mayor complimented the team on their success in Dunedin. The Otago Rugby Union held the Country Week for the purpose of seeing what the boys from the country could do, and they not only held their own, but showed them points in the game. The selector (Mr Harris) had seen his way clear to select Dwcer and Davidson for the tour North, and both these players had worthily upheld the country team's name. He had very much in moving the following resolution : " That this meeting offers its congratulations to the Vincent County Football Team on its successful season." He would not keep them any longer, but would call on Mr G. Wishart to favor them with a musical selection (cheers). Mr Wishart's Euphonium Solo was a treat, and it was highly appreciated. Mr D. Cahill, in the absence of the Captain (Mr T. Cahill), thanked the citizens for the hearty reception accorded to the team. They had journeyed to Dunedin with the full intention of doing their best. They played a clean and hard game, and the result was, as all were aware, that they had held their own. He did not see why they should not. Two of the team had been selected to tour, and he thought that very satisfactory. A song by Mr Springer was the I next item on the programme ; this was rendered in this gentleman's usual manner, and was well received. Mr Abel then moved the following resolution, which was received with acclamation : —" That this meeting ott'ei-s its congratulations to Messrs Dvvyer and Davidson on their being selected as members of the Otago Team, and desires to congratulate them for the worthy manner in which they upheld the traditions of the Otago Football on the tour." He would also like to put in a word for Mr Harris, sole selector, as it required a certain amount of pluck to put country players in ahead of town players. Mr Bush (recitation) also contributed to the programme. Messrs Dwyer and Davidson suitably responded. The hall was then cleared for dancing, fully 30 couples staying to " trip the light fantnstic." Music was supplied by the Partridge Bros., and the floor was in excellent condition. The duties of M.C. were in the I capable hands of Messrs Wishart and I Jolly. Tho refreshments, of which there was an abundance, were of a dainty order. Dancing was kept merrily going until the small hours of the morning, all having a good time.
