ELECTRIC LIGHT FOR KAITANGATA.

SCHEME UNDER CONSIDERATION. Further progress was made in connection -with the proposal for tundndependent electric light service for the of Kaitarfgata on Wednesday night, when a revised report and estimate for a generating system was received from the borough consulting engineer (!Mr F. J. Williams). Mr William's considered that a generating station' adequate for the present needs of Mie town sliould be capa'ble of supplying 57 b.h.p., sufficient -to supply the street lighting and the lighting for 350 houses, As the demand increased a further unit could be installed when required, He considered that only two sources of supply worth discussing—viz., steam power and suction gas. TJii! latter was deemed slightly tht cheaper in -capital cost and more economical to operate, though the for'iiier might prove the more clastic. He outlined a scheme for a steam plant with hand-'fired 'boilgr, it being unusual to install a mechanical' stoker for a iboiler of small capacity. 'The coSt of a steam plant with a 75 h.p. condensing engine and 45 k.w. generator lie estimated at £7480, and a suction gas plant of the same horse-power and generator power at £6655. House lighting for a '340-house service and entailing three 15 k.v.a. transformers would amount to £4390, and street lighting an additional £lOlO, the total cost for a steam plant ibeing estimated at £12,880, and for a suction gas plant at £12,055. He estimated that the annual running costs when the plant reached its full capacity, and assuming a full load for eight hours- and a-half load for eight 'hours, would, for a steam plant, be about £3300. Consideration of the report was held over until a special meeting of the council on January 5.
