BRITISH POLITICS.
CENSURE MOTION DEFEATED.
LONDON, March 10.
In the House of Commons Sir J. 8. Randies' (Unionist member for Manchester, N.W.) motion censuring Right Hon. t>: Lloyd George (Chancellor of the Exchequer) for Unfounded attacks on individuals, particularly at Glasgow in February, was defeated by 301 votes to 240.
In his speech at Glasgow on the laud campaign Mr Lloyd George said it had cost Glasgow a quarter of a million to clear a. sunn area, which tho landlord should have been compelled to clear as a nuisance. They must make the land contribute on the basis of its real value. The Duke of Montrose had extracted l a vast isum—on the bas.s of his contribution to the rates —for the land acquired from him for the Glasgow waterworks. The Admiralty had been forced to pay £27,225 for 10 acres for a torpedo depot at Greenock, which was assessed for rating at £ll an acre. The Duke of Sutherland, in his recent offer to sell his estate to the- Government, had thrown in every crag and every mountain at 22s 6d per acre. He wanted £479,000 for the learn, scraggy end of his huge joint, while his trustees valued his million acres- for probate at £400,000. There bad never "been such a case since the days of Ananias and Sapphira.
