MILITARY TRAINING, CHRISTCHURCH, March 10. Tho officer commanding the Canterbury military district ( has returned to headquarters after a tour of inspection in Nelson and Westland. Certain parts of Westland have in the past been quoted as being a hotbed of anti-militarism, and it has been freely stated that in some centres not a single fad was parading. The officer commanding the district is of opinion that", whatever may have been tho state of affairs in the past, there has been a remarkable development of Territorial and Senbr Cadets training on the West Coast. The parade states of the Senior Cadet companies in area, group 11a, comprising the whole of the Westland district and a portion of the Nelson district, afford a complete refutation of some of the statements made by opponents of military training. In two cases, Hokitika. and Denniston, the full strength of the companies paraded; at Reef ton.and at Brunnerton there was not a single absentee without leave; the numbers of those absent on leave being six and one respectively. Four of the parade states show absentees without leave —namely, Blackball, Runanga. and Greymouth (2) so that out of the total strength there- were only 27 delinquents.

A SMART ESCAPE. TIMAltn, March 11. Two youths named Wilson (10) and Mathews (17), who escaped from Burnham on February 19 and were suspected of breaking into a number of places, including the Timaru Rifle Club's magazine and the Orari Rifle Club's locker, were arrested at St. Andrews last weelc wibh two rifles and ammunition in their possession. They were brought to Timaru and there remanded till to-mor-row. The gaoler opened the doer this morning in the course of his duties, and both bolted without hats, boots or sox. The alarm was given and the police and several civilians gave chase through the courthouse ground and a timber yard towards the beach, where they lost sight of the escapees. The search is being continued.

INFANTILE PARALYSIS. AUCKLAND, March 11. Two cases of infantile paralysis are at present under , treatment in the Auckland Hospital. The sufferers are boys aged respectively about two and three years. The medical authorities place them in the category of mild cases and the patients are progressing favorably. Dr. Maguiro, medical superintendent of the hospital, informed a reporter that at this time of the year there were usually one or two cases of infantile paralysis in the institution and there was nothing abnormal in this instance. FOUND AT FOOT OF EMBANKMENT CHRISTCHURCH, March 11. ■ About 10.15 o'clock this morning a man was found at the foot of the embankment in Simon Quay, Lyttelton, close to the building of the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Co., Ltd. The man, who was identified as Colin Campbell, a fireman, was picked up in a semi-conscious condition and removed to the casualty ward, where he was attended by a doctor. He was found to he suffering from a compound fracture of the right arm, and waa in a very weak state from exposure, having apparently Jain out all night. The embankment over which the unfortunate man fell was about 40ft high, Campbell died from his at about 11.50 p.m.

At a meeting of the National Executive of the Social Democratic Pat'ty. Mr H. Hunter, of Cliristfhurch, presiding, a resolution was adopted rejecting the suggestion for a mutual agreement with the Liberal Party for election purposes. It was resolved that candidates only be nominated on a guarantee of 10 per cent, of voters at the preceding electipn, and if this is not forthcoming the party will not only not nominate a candidate hut oppose anyone nominated in the name of Labor by other means.
