Proposal to Purchase Suction Pump,

The Board then had a conference with Mr Ramsay, County Engineer, regarding the practicability of a suction pump for removing ' the shoals which blocked the passage of the steamer. Mr Ramsay spoke very favourab.y regarding the proposal, "and said he knew of a l(j h.p. Robey engine that could be bought for £135, that a JO inch pump could be got for about £25(1, and that the total cost of piping and litting up would be about' £OOO. The capacity would be about 120 cubic yards of gravel per hour, and this could be deposited at a distance of 100 feet or more at either side. He had had experience in the working of these pumps, and was assured as to their suitability for the work required. The plant could be easily fixed on either of the steamers, and when not required could be easily removed. The Board was favourably disposed to the scheme, and Mr Ramsay agreed to submit written proposals and full details as to the cost, etc.. at a meeting to be held on the "22nd inst. The .New Steamer. The Board then went into committee to consider matters in connection with the new steamer, and in the afternoon inspected the boat and met Mr McGregor the builder. The point in consideration was that under the specification the draft must not exceed 2ft Gin with a 60-ton load, and that at present, empty, she is drawing about 2ft lOin aft and, it is understood, under 2ft forward. The decision arrived at was that the architect (Mr Mcßae) be asked to meet the board, and that arrangements be made to have a 00 ton load put aboard, and that members of the board be notified by wire when the boat will be ready for the test.
