COLLIE DOG CLUBS.

I A meeting of collie dog owners of the South island was held in the Excelsior Hotel, Dunedin, on Thursday, afternoon. There was a representative gathering of 'lO or 50 owners. Mr J. Menzies, the oldest member of the Waitaki Collie Club, presided. The meeting had been called principally for the purpose of considering the question of forming an association for the varjious collie dog clubs of the South Island. j Mr A. J. Guild, Middlemarch, was I appointed secretary pro tem. Mr P. Watt moved, and Mr A. J. Guild seconded, a motion in favour of the formation of the South island Col( lie Dog Club Association. Mr Watt, of the Clutha Collie Dog Club, spoke in favour of the resolution. It would help in every way and promote good feeling. Mr A. Scott, of the Taieri Club, said his club would no doubt join the association if anyone could prove that they would derive any benelit from it. He suggested that on any vote being taken only one delegate should vote from each club. The Chairman called for a show of hands from the regularly appointed club delegates who. were asked to sit by themselves. Mr McLaughlan said that one thing they were anxious to secure was uniformity of judging. That would be , one of the benefits of the proposed association. It would be in the interests of the country clubs. A representative of the Anniri Collie Club asked for information regarding | the working of the North Island Association, and whether there was pro-| fessionalism in connection with it. Mr Anderson (Sutton) advocated a uniform standard of work and points, which could only be brought about through an association. At this point the business of the meeting was restricted to those who had been appointed official delegates. Mr •). Little (Christchurch) said he failed to see any reason for the formation of an association. He feared it would lead to an arrangement of the dates of trials so that a man might go the round of them. This would tend to professionalism, and that was**, what they wanted to keep down.— ("Hear, hear.") He would like in this over-ruled country to have one little sport in which no one could in-, terfere.—("Hear, hear.") Mr Guild said he had had a good deal to do with the calling of the meeting, and he favoured the formation of an association mainly in the interests of judges, who were hampered by the difference of points awarded at the various trials. Mr P. Watt moved, and Mr J. Anderson seconded, that an association be formed of collie dog clubs ot the South Island. Mr Oliver (Cheviot) and Mr S. Chisnall (Kaikoura) moved and seconded a direct negative. By request the secretary read the rules of the North Island Association. Mr A. Gibson, of the Taieri Club, said that so far he had heard nothing' that would incline him to vote for the formation of an association. 1 heir little club afforded them a certain amount of amusement and education, and he doubted if they wished to join in with a larger association. Jlr P. A. Watt said that professionals could not possibly have a majority on the association, and the association was the first thing that would put professionalism down. '1 he association would foster a fellow feeling among the various clubs. | Representatives of the following [ clubs voted for the amendment and_ a gainst the formation of an associaI lion Taieri, Cheviot, Waikari, Amuri, Waihemo, Kaikoura, Christchurch, Gore, Bruce, Mossburn and Malvern. The representatives of Clutha and Strath Taieri were the only ones favouring the motion. The Chairman expressed regret at the result, but said that no doubt the i meeting had done much good. The pro-, posal might be brought forward again , at a future date. i A hearty vote of thanks was accord/ i ed the chairman for presiding.
