KAITANGATA.

(I'rom our Own Correspondent.) I A very old and much respected resident passed away last Tuesday, in the person oi Mr E. Dale, aged 03. Ihe deceased gentleman had a very interesting career up to the last 20 years of his life. He was born in London, and came to -New Zealand in the early GO's and was nctivoly engaged in the Maori war, being taken prisoner and all of his company being massacred except himself. The deceased, up to about a fortnight ago, was engaged in bootmaking and repairing. He leaves ai grown-up family of sons and daughters. He was interred last Thursday at the Northern Cemetery, Mr lnncs, evangelist of Church of Christ, of : which deceased was a prominent member, officiating at the grave. Mr John Moslev, of Inch Clutha, was engaged at Victoria Park last Saturday, in company with several members of the Council, in locating ( water for the purpose of supplying the ( batlhs, and was successful at one par- ' ticular spot, in striking a spring. Further at the instiga- * tion of the Council, will take place. | The bazaar in aid of the swimming | baths fund has been in progress since | Thursday night, and although fairly j successful, has not reached anticipations. This is accounted for by the Dunedin Show drawing a largo number from the town and making a drain on the purses of the community. It is supposed that £l5O will be made. The commit too which has in hand the arrangements for a farewell function to Mr C. E. Yates, met in the Council Chambers last Friday evening, the Mayor presiding. It was agreed to hold a conversazione in the Presbyterian Hall on Tuesday evening, 15th—the eve of Mr Yates' departure from Kaitangata.
