KAITANGATA.

[Fnoii Our Own Correspondent.] The popular concert held in Masonic Hall last Saturday night was the best up to date, and though the night was miserably wet there , was a yery good attendance. The various performers went through their parts very creditably and were frequently applauded. I understand these concerts are to he held regularly. They deserve good patronage. I have often seen less amusement and music given for four times the admission fee. Mr Andrew Carson, who works at the pit head of the Kaitangata mine, met with a mishap on Saturday night. For some reason he did not manage to get the chain unfastened off the truck at the right time, and travelled along with the truck till he succeeded in doing so ; then on slipping aside his foot slipped and he fell down the embankment, sustaining a bruised side, but is now nearly recovered. In the absence of Dr Thomson, he was attended at first by Dr Fitzgerald. It is expected he will be able to resume work before long. The air shaft begun on Monday week at the Castle Hill mine is now in progress. A large number of men are employed, and three shifts at work. The ambulance class in connection with the Castle Hill mine promises to be a success, and the members will soon be capable of good work under the tuition of Dr Fitzgerald. A benefit society has also been started, and a good number have joined. Mr Eaynes is secretary. The weather latterly has been very wet, but bright sunny days are re-appearing. ' The announcement at the Saturday night concert of the victory of our footballers at Owaka by 13 poiuts to 6 was very welcome news, and it must have been gratifying to Dr Thomson for the team thus to retrive its prestige. I believe a return match will be played at Kaitangata on the 23vd inst. New buildings are still going on. This wpek two new shops were commenced and are now in course of erection for Mr A. Hislop. Mr M. Carson has two new places of business just about finished. One is just occupied as a boot shop, and the other is to be a furniture warehouse, June 13, 1894.
