OWAKA.
■ . .. ■♦ -.- ■ ■" ■ ; [FItOJIOUR OWN COEKESPONDIiNT. | Having fine weather 'for the holidays visitors and others 'dowri this way have been ; able to get in a good' time". The Caversham ! footballers arrived oto , Eriday, and . a scratch ; cricket match was: arranged for the afternoon, and after . an enjoyable game victory rested | with the Cavershain,. boys by 25 runs, the bowling of Jeff erspri i, being too "much: for the local players., ...... The concert and' dance Jield at night was a distinct success, the'gum of L 9 being realized, which, after paying/expenses,"willg /expense's, "will leave a small sum td_'go t .'.tßwaids the ground. As Is only was charged for the concert it reduced the. income , considerably. The following programme was got ' through in good time, and a very good accouiit of themselves was I rendered by the ' different artistes : — First \ part.— Piano' duet, 'Misses Carltoii"; song, '. "Wrecked and saved,"- Mr Wright; song, "A nnie Laurie," -Mr Latta;' song 1 , "The i Arab's farewell to his steed," G. Vial ; duet, | " Hunting tower," Mrs M'Lean and, Mr Bryant; song, : " Wrecked" and saved," Mr OsLatta. Second part- I—by1 — by the Dunedin "Surprise Minstrels, J. "Bryant, J. Deaker, W. Woods, J. Tudor, and Mr Cunningham. — Comic song by Mr Deaker ; nigger specialty by' W. Woods ; nigger sketch, " Slavery day's," by J. Bryant and V J. Tudor ; farce, ("The Whistling "Artist," by J. Tudor, J, j Deaker, and J. Bryant';' farce, " Its not in ! the Book," by the company. The dance i after the concert was well patronised.. Mr 1 Cunningham very kindly supplied the music, which was of the best. .The minstrels, who I occupied the second part of the programme, ' caused a good deal iof r'amusement. Special t mention must be made of Messrs Deakin and '; J. Bryant, .who were. Al in both singing, and ! acting. ". . ':i' i The football match, which came off on | Saturday, wa3 won by Caversham (as was j expected) by 16 points.--. The Owaka boys : csrtainly played better than was anticipated, | the forwards holding their own, but in the 1 passing game they had a good deal to learn. ■ The Caversham backs played the quick pass, f ing game, which puzzled "the Owaka backs ' considerably. With practice this season the : Owaka team should improve a good bit, and j as Caversham are wanting us to go. down and ! play a return match on- 24th May, and if a . team can be raised the match will come off, it behoves the team to practise as much as possible. ■ A dinner was • given to the visitors on Saturday at Hostess Vial's, and it certainly i speaks well for her catering 1 when the visitors I stated they had never 'sat down to a football : dinner given in the same style and with the same good things provided.. - T ' ' After ample justice had been, done a smoke concert was held, the Owaka" president (Mr J. j Blair) presiding, and a pleasant evening was j spent in song and story* one .and all contributing their mite, ' : '^ - ■ ■ '•- j 'On Sunday Mi- James V^al very kindly j drove the visitors out to Port' 1 Molyneux free of charge, and the trip was much enjoyed by them. Time was allowed on Monday to visit the lake and get a dip, and they returned to town by the 2 o'clock train much pleased with their outing, and with a determination to return at some future time and bring more with them. The election has come and' gone, aud has ended, as everyone expected, in ths return of* the temperance candidates and the carrying of the no license vote. . . Owing to the good weather the harvest operations are pretty well over, and they are waiting anxiously to hear of a threshing mill coming in this direction. - Owaka, March- 27. ' '
