The Lakeside Coal Company have bsen more fortunate in their work of prospecting than their neighbouring company. Work was commenced on Monday, and on Thursday they struck a seam of coal 18fn thick, the quality of which is equal to any in the district Mr Panlin has placed a sample in the hands of Dr Black for analysis.

Once more the grievous question " has Kaitargata a right to representation upon the CluHia River Board " has been brought to the front, and from the tone of the conversational discussion that took place between the deputation that waited npon the borough council and councillors themselves it appears a determined effort will be made to obtain representation on the board.

The subject of making the river from the month to Kaitangata navieatable for ocean-going ships was one which both deputation and councillors were una voce. The importance of the subject was most

realisable, when one member .of the deputation asserted that a well known gentleman was prepared to place a line of of three steamers upon the. river to foster trade. To emphasise his assertion he gave the gentleman's name. With such evident prospects the subject should command the immediate attention of the board.

On Saturday evening we are to be honoured with a visit of Lyon's Operatic Burlesque Company. The company have just completed a tour through the goldfields, and the press comments throughout are most favourable. With such recommendations it is safe to predict a bumper heusc
