STONEY CREEK.

[from cub own correspondent.]

The want of a post-office in Hillend has been keenly felt by the settlers since the opening up of the district, but even when there are a large number of well-to-do settlers the grievance is likely to continue. The nearest post-office is at Balclutha or Lovells Plat— a distance, on the average, of more than nine miles from the upper district. Now, considering the state of the roads, which are macadamised as far as Stoney Creek school, the settlers here justly think the postal authorities might grant us a boon by establishing a centre at the schoolhouse, from which by the scholars and others the letters might be conveyed to the upper district. A letter sometimes lies for weeks in the Balclutha post-office, and the answer to an important communication must all wait a considerable time. The distance from Balclutha to the schoolhouse is less than four miles, and the expense would therefore be slight. Please let us know, if possible, through your columns, how we may make an effort to get the letters to the schoolhouse by post. The distance is short, the roads are good, and the mails can be sent by children to the upper districts. [Note.* — We know Mr Ban*, Chief Postmaster, is just as anxious to accommodate the settlers in every reasonable way as they are to obtain the accommodation. We shall see him, and ascertain what can be done for Hillend, &0.-Ed. C.L.]
