PORT MOLYNEUX

[from oue own correspondent! The Education Board have not put off much time in responding to the wishes of our School Committee for a teacher to fill the position lately held by Mr Hay, now resigned. The Board recommended Mr Purvis, who on Saturday made his appearance at our " thriving and rising township" v !), and paid a visit to our school, schoolhouse, and grounds, shewing a little forethought by "looking before leaping." I understand he gave no positive answer as to^whether he Avould accept the situation. A shock of earthquake was distinctly felt here on Saturday last, at about three o'clock p.m. From the vibration it appeared to run from N.E. to S.W.

The wooden shed at the jetty has been an unfortunate one. Several times it has been run into by the sprit of vessels coming to the jetty — of course knocking the end of the shed to pieces ; and, although we had a harbour-master here at the time, supposed to take a note of such things, still it is supposed there was no step taken to get the captains or owners of vessels who did the mischief to make good the ! damage. A short time ago very little labour would have been required to put the shed in order. It now lies a heap of ruins, and as it is no one's business to interfere with it it will soon be away piecemeal. The iron shed wliich has hitherto been regularly used for storing goods is getting into a very dilapidated state — windows gone, doors unhinged or immovable, floor loose and in some parts torn away, a portion of the wallplate with no foundation to rest upon ; and if something be .not done (and clone soon) shippers and consignees will have to resort to.the primative plan of rushes or tarpaulins to j cover their goods from the weather, whereas a small sum would at present be sufficient to make a great improvement in. that useful place for storages. Whose province is it to look after this property 1 I believe the members of the River Trust,. the Harbour Board, the Road Board, the County Council, and I am atraid the Government will repudiate having control overit. If it rests with the settlers, why not put their shoulder to the wheel, and make a little improvement at once 1 e< A stitch in time saves nine." Should this meet the eye of Mi* Thomson, he might try for LSO from Government for this work. We are as much entitled to such a sum. as the Catlins people are entitled to Lsoofdr their jetty. '•
