Sir,—Recently a lot of people have been dismayed at proposals to build a tall apartment building in Gloucester Street and it has appeared that even if opinion was heavily against the proposal it would be now most difficult to stop it going ahead. It appears that regulations will be passed to protect that area from at least any further high-rise buildings. I hope that, when doing so, the council will consider other areas as well. Living on St Andrews Hill, I was dismayed when a high-rise tower was proposed for construction near the Heathcote Bridge on Ferry Road. I notice taller buildings being erected in Sydenham, Riccarton and a surprisingly high crane has now gone up at Papanui. I believe tall buildings detract from suburban districts and should be forbidden there also. — Yours, etc., P. A. B. RICHARDS. September 1, 1989.
