Record will be lost
NZPA-Reuter Barcelona Ben Johnson will be stripped of the world 100 metres record he set at the 1987 Rome world championships, the International Amateur Athletic Federation (1.A.A.F.) vice-president, Arne Ljungqvist, said yesterday. Mr Ljungqvist, speaking after an I.A.A.F. Council meeting, said the council proposed publishing a new world record list on January 1 next year. “Johnson’s mark will not be honoured,” he said, but added there had been no discussion at the council meeting whether Johnson’s world title should be taken away. The council proposal for a new record list must be ratified by the I.A.A.F. Congress which starts a two-day meeting today.
