Higgins shoots well

PA Auckland A brilliant round by Jan Higgins at the Grange yesterday has boosted the hopes of the New Zealand women’s golf team for the Tasman Cup against Australia in Perth next week. Higgins shot a three-under-par 70 in the first round of qualifying for the Auckland provincial title. She added a 76 in the afternoon for a five-shot lead. Her closest challenger yesterday was Sirikit team-mate Sheree Higgens, of Hamilton, who had rounds of 77 and 74. The experienced Liz Douglas (Christchurch) qualified in third place with rounds of 78 and 81 for a total of 159. Kerrin Starr (Christchurch) shot rounds of 84 and 81.
