N.Z. yachts lead
NZPA London The New Zealand maxi yachts, Steinlager 2 and Fisher and Paykel, have taken command of the Whitbread Round-the-World race as the ocean epic enters its fourth day. The Peter Blake-skippered Steinlager is leading the fleet about four miles ahead of its fellow Kiwi ketch, with Grant Dalton at the helm, having 5331 miles to reach the Uruguayan coastal city of Punta del Este to complete the first leg. Yesterday both boats reported speeds of 14.3 knots, a full knot faster than third-placed Union Bank of Finland, with the Swiss yacht, Merit, in fourth place 15 miles behind Steinlager and making 12.7 knots.
